I was just wondering this, because i work at a horse camp that owns horses and ponies. Sometimes, a taller or larger camper wants to ride a pony, and i am unsure how safe it would be for both of them, especially if the pony is older. thanks, sorry if i sound really stupid :p

Honestly it depends on the age and fitness of the horse. The bottom of your heel should be level with the bottom of the horses stomach when in a stirrup. Thats how you tell if your the correct size for the horse.

It depends on the fitness, health and conformation of the horse. An average rule of thumb is between 15% and 25% of the horse’s bodyweight, but don’t forget to factor in the saddle.

There’s no way you sound stupid! lol I am 18 and I would like a horse that is more like a pony, so I have been dealing with the same type of question..(sticking with welsh cobs now!) Here is a cool way to calculate how much each horse can carry, with tips on making it safer for both the horse and rider!
